Ideas don’t make successful startups. Execution does.

You might think your idea is special but most of the time a bigger fish can steal it with ease. Look at how quickly other social media platforms added rooms when Clubhouse became popular. They survived and Clubhouse will be forgotten.

Some people force me to sign an NDA before they tell me their startup idea. If they think I can steal their idea and execute it better than them, they should give up. They must have a clear response to “why you?” otherwise I don’t invest.

Hasan Kubba ran a profitable lifestyle business then turned to angel investing. Yet it became a chore because the average pitch was so low quality. He wanted to find a faster way to filter applicants to focus on those who had the greatest chances of succeeding. The MILES framework was born which grew into bestseller The Unfair Advantage.

The answer to “why you?” should be a cocktail of traits unique to you which aren’t easy to mimic. These are your unfair advantages. If you can articulate these well then you’ll have investors fighting to invest.

Follow along with the framework to see what you can leverage.

Based on this episode of Entrepreneur’s Handbook podcast with Hasan.

Money

The mafia runs Silicon Valley. Not the Silician-kind but the Paypal Mafia. This is a group of twenty-plus entrepreneurs who all made their money working for Paypal in the early days then went on to start their own businesses.

You might have heard of some of the companies they founded or led.

Tesla.
YouTube.
LinkedIn.

Their high earnings meant they had much higher runways than other entrepreneurs would. This meant they could take far more risks and outcompete by throwing money at problems.

It’s the same for any entrepreneur who has money from a previous career or from a rich family. Jeff Bezos accepted $300k from his parents. In a world that fetishizes his greatness, it’s important not to forget this.

The money advantages don’t need to be so extreme though. If you can live with your parents rent-free then you have an edge over your peers who have much higher expenses.

Hasan could work on his startup whilst not earning any money because he had the support of his family. If he was forced to pay for everything himself, his business may have never taken off and I would have never read his book.

If you have people around you who can support you financially, make sure you are grateful!

Intelligence & Insights

Raw intelligence is a blessing but it can also be a curse.

Misunderstood geniuses appear throughout history. Christopher Langan has an IQ above 200 but spent most of his adult life working as a bouncer. He dropped out of university because he thought he knew better than his professors. He’s smarter than every founder in silicon valley but lacked the social skills to use his ability in a meaningful way.

For intelligence to be an effective unfair advantage, it must be targeted. This is where insight comes into play. Your background is unique and means you can see solutions where other people don’t even realize there’s a problem. Deep knowledge of one area combined with a curiosity for another can lead to interesting combinations.

A great example of this is Tristan Walker who founded Walker & Company. He graduated from Stanford Business School and was an entrepreneur-in-residence at Andreessen Horowitz. He had always struggled with shaving irritation his entire life and realized it was a common problem amongst black men. It was an ignored market because of the lack of diversity in board rooms.

Tristan combined his unfair advantages to meet the need and get VCs on board.

Location & Luck

Bill Gates is smart but luck played a huge part in his success.

He built world-leading expertise because he was one of the only people to have access to top-of-the-line computers while still in high school. His competitors had to wait until they went to an elite university before they could learn. Bill was the perfect age to take a big risk on PCs when the industry had high barriers to entry.

My first language is English and I grew up in London. I’m not Bill Gates but a large part of what I’ve achieved today is due to these two factors. Had I been born in a small village in Panjab like my father, I doubt you’d be reading this.

London is a magnet for highly driven people so just by living here, I’m more likely to meet people who could have a big impact on my career. They can then open the doors for me without me needing to send a thousand cold emails from Siberia.

It’s possible to increase your chances of being lucky though. Putting your work out in public makes it more likely someone will notice you. You can go to networking events and keep experimenting with ideas.

Nothing in life is guaranteed but you have to play the game to win.

Education & Expertise

It’s become popular to tell aspiring entrepreneurs they should skip university if they want to build a business. This is terrible advice and ignores all the unfair advantages an education gives you. It’s not a coincidence so many famous entrepreneurs went to Stanford or Harvard.

Education goes beyond just what is taught in lectures even though this is useful. As someone with an economics degree, it pains me how poorly many people understand how money works as they scream about cryptocurrency from the top of their lungs. University doesn’t teach you everything but it can help you make more informed decisions.

The signal aspect is another major effect as of right or wrong, simply having Stanford in your bio will make investors take you more seriously. It’s a signal you’re intelligent and hardworking even if you’re not.

The biggest advantage comes from networking as many top programs will give you access to high-quality contacts. It increases the chances you’ll have a personal link to someone with enough power to get your startup off the ground.

If your university days are behind you, it’s doesn’t mean you can’t use this unfair advantage though it may be more difficult. Hasan learned how to build a passive income machine from an online course. The key is to learn a skill that others need help with.

Social Status

Two years ago, WeWork was worth $50 billion despite being a low-profit margin office space business. On paper, it doesn’t make any sense but the secret sauce was Adam Neumann. The founder had electric charisma and made friends in high places with ease.

Investors can use a charisma proxy where they assume someone who is well-spoken is also competent in other areas even if there’s no evidence.

Likeability is an underrated key to success for many founders. They get funded when others wouldn’t. They get free advice when others get ignored. They are forgiven for mistakes when others aren’t.

Sometimes you don’t even need to be likable yourself as association with a credible person can be enough. With my podcast, I’m aware a potential guest may not come on for me but they see their friend has already come on. This means each connection I make can exponentially increase my social status.

If you aren’t the type of person to command an entire room’s potential, focus on one new relationship. Prove yourself trustworthy to this one person and you’ll by proxy gain a bit of trust with another hundred people.

Who you know matters but you can always expand your network in an authentic way.

They use it because their parents weren’t rich but they forget about all their employees. Most businesses aren’t built by one visionary without the help of an army of helpers. Few people actually do it all by themselves even if they claim to.

Eric Barone is one of these rare creatures.

Using wages as a part-time theatre usher as funding, he created the massively popular Stardew Valley video game. All by himself. For context, the development of Super Mario Odyessy needed 68 different specialized roles. Eric was the producer, storyteller, developer, audio director, and artist all rolled into one.

It took him over four years but the game was an instant smash hit. Professional game reviewers loved it too; IGN rated it 95/100. It’s sold at least 15 million copies and made at least $34 million for Eric; the revenue is likely to be much higher today as that number comes from 2017.

You might be tempted to follow in his footsteps but when you read on, you’ll see how his obsession almost broke him.

It was just meant to be practice

“I just had my intuition as to what was the next important thing I should work on.” — Eric Barone

Hindsight bias is strong in many entrepreneurs. They’ll preach about how they always had a higher mission when they started their business but it’s easy to say when they’ve already made it.

Eric is more humble. He was a computer science major who no one would hire. He only started working on the game as a way to keep his coding skills sharp so he could impress potential employers. The burning passion to make the game perfect came later on. Maybe if Apple had given him a job, millions of people would never have had the pleasure of playing Stardew Valley.

You don’t need to begin with the end in mind. It’s ok to start something and work out along the way whether or not you’re passionate about it. We’re all muddling our way through life. You can abandon a project if doesn’t light a fire in your belly but you could build something great if it does. You’ll never know unless you try.

Why not me?

The mindset shift from practice to tenacity had one basic pillar.

Whenever he came across a task he didn’t know how to do, he asked himself, “why not me?” If there were other people out there who could do it, why couldn’t he learn how to do it? Pixel art was something he remembers being difficult but he sunk hundreds of hours into getting better. His self-belief meant Stardew Valley was high quality in every measure.

Yet the me-against-the-world mentality also stopped him from ever asking for help. Most of us turn to Google with our problems and we will often find the answer yet sometimes no one has posted about the unique challenge you face. When I worked in tech this is when I would ask a colleague or ask for advice in a forum. I saw no point in re-inventing the wheel as the end product would be the same.

In some ways, Eric succeeded because he took this outlook and in other ways, it was despite it.

The irony

For those of you who have never played Stardew Valley, it’s a refreshingly simple game.

The main character in Stardew Valley quits his job at an inflexible corporation because his grandpa leaves him a plot of land in the middle of nowhere. The character chooses to restart his life out in nature surrounded by beauty. The gameplay is based around farming and interacting with characters who have a human-like depth to them.

This was the complete opposite to Eric’s life. He worked 80 hour weeks and barely left the house. He was his own inflexible boss but there was no plot of land to escape to. His girlfriend remembers what he was like:

“He would be working all day till 11:30 P.M. and I would be like, ‘Hey, you have to get off the computer. You have to do something with me. We have to eat dinner. We have to watch an episode of Star Trek.’ I needed more interaction with him.”

Eric’s obsessive attention to detail made the game as great as it is but the costs to his health and his relationships were great. If I told you that all you needed to do was work 80 hour weeks on top of a part-time job and stay inside all day to make $30 million, would you take it?

He admits “it was definitely a struggle to keep my sanity.”

Burnout strikes

Even after the game was released in 2016, Eric continued being a one-man team for a while. He’d have to be superhuman to provide support to millions of players and eventually all his hard work caught up with him.

In August 2017, he took an overdue break and went on a road trip across America with his girlfriend and housemates. Eric experienced the outside world again with the freedom of one of his virtual characters. They stopped off in California where he allowed himself to relax on the beach like when he was a kid. He later hired someone to help him manage Stardew Valley.

He’s now working on a new project called Haunted Chocolatier by himself again. Yet the unhealthy obsession no longer seems to be there. He’s learned from Stardew Valley and while he wants his new game to be even better, he’s not destroying himself to do it.

I believe he can be proud of is how many people’s lives he has impacted with his game. During the pandemic, the importance of gaming to people’s mental health came into focus. I know many people who used gaming as a way to cope whether it be complex games such as Eric’s Stardew Valley or simple games such as free online solitaire.

It might not have been his intention but there are so many examples of people who say it has made their lives better. Maybe making games despite the money isn’t the best thing for your mental health but playing them could be.

Can you name the fastest-growing European startup ever?

The answer is Hopin.

It started as a virtual event experience company back in 2019 before remote work was a buzzword. When Dave Schools joined as the Head of Marketing when the company had no employees and zero revenue. He played a key part in the early days as Hopin challenged the giants of the online video world.

He remembers walking down a TechCrunch event with his laptop in hand and winning a deal with Dell. This was all pre-pandemic. Once the world turned upside down, a rocket was lit under Hopin and it reached unicorn status rapidly.

Today it’s worth nearly eight billion dollars. They’ve staked their place in the tech stack of giant enterprises and indy organizations alike. Dave believes what he calls “roadmap marketing” was a major reason behind this rapid growth combined with the fantastic people he worked with. Here we break it down so other entrepreneurs can use it for themselves.

This article is based on an episode of Entrepreneur’s Handbook with Dave Schools.

“Build features for logos”

How did Hopin as such a new company earn such huge names as clients to put on their website?

It’s no mistake or accident. It was an intentional strategy.

While the early product was innovative, it often lacked features large enterprises considered must-haves for them to become customers. Some startup founders would accept defeat and try someone else.

Hopin’s founder, Johnny Bourfhat, was different. Instead of telling a potential client that they didn’t have a feature, he’d say they didn’t have it yet. He would ask when their event was then take a moment to think. Inside his head, he was doing the calculations to figure out the logistics. Johnny would then tell the company the feature would be ready by then with confidence.

If he needed to hire more people or switch focus from other projects to deliver then he would. The priority for development was set by the needs of potential clients, not plucked out of thin air. The feedback from sales calls fed directly into the development pipeline.

They built the features the Wall Street Journal needed.
They built the features TechCrunch Disrupt needed.
They built the features The Atlantic needed.

Hopin gained a reputation for delivering on its promises and this encouraged even more companies to come on board.

How to do this for yourself

This is not a license to guarantee the stars to potential clients. We don’t want a repeat of the tragic tale of Theranos.

What Hopin did was ethical because Johnny made guarantees which he truly believed in. It does help that Johnny was an incredible developer so had a strong grasp of what was possible and what wasn’t. If you don’t have the technical knowledge yourself, make sure you have someone on the call who can speak up on how plausible it is for a new feature to be ready in time.

If you aren’t so blessed to have a team that can meet all the demands from potential customers then you need to prioritize. You rank your opportunities by what would be the most impressive logo to show other companies and focus on them. It might mean you need to turn away some customers in the short run but you should keep lines of communication open.

Once you have existing customers then you order them by the highest paying first. You’ve got a duty to take care of them because they are paying your bills!

If you have happy customers then you can leverage partner marketing. It’s one thing having a logo on your website but having a video testimonial from someone senior shows a deeper level of trust. It snowballs from there!

Repeat, repeat, repeat

Dave is confident this method works because he’s using it for the third time for his stealth new product launch within Hopin. He recognized the massive success it led to for Hopin’s core product and repeated it for the Streamyard Business launch. He couldn’t reveal much about the new venture but should be keeping your eyes peeled based on his history.

What’s great about Dave’s role within Hopin now is he is able to lead startups within a startup. It gives the new launches the best of both worlds as they have the financial support but none of the rigidity that usually comes with it in other large tech companies.

Roadmap marketing might seem like a strategy only for scrappy startups but it can be applied by companies of all sizes if they have the ambition.

When you have your first successful product launch, learn from Dave. Keep those who love the early stages of a startup able to focus on emerging products and you’ll keep launching killer products. Good luck.

2021 hasn’t been the year we all hoped for but I’m hopeful 2022 will be brighter.

You might have struggled to find the time to keep up to date with the best business books this year so I’ve compiled this list for you. The current times are reflected in what people were reading with several corporate catastrophe books as well as books covering equality and the climate.

Ranking books is always highly subjective and I use a simple formula to order this list. Like movies, the first people to review are super fans or know the author personally. I account for that by giving extra weight to the number of reviews then I normalize the raw figures to give a score out of 100.

This isn’t a list of my favorite books but based on the views of the highly engaged readers of Goodreads.com.

AP: Amardeep Parmar score (books are ranked from lowest to highest score)
GR: Goodreads.com rating and number of ratings
AZ: Amazon.com rating and number of ratings

(Please note that this story contains affiliate links but you can choose to simply google the titles instead should you wish to purchase elsewhere. You can find the 2020 list here.)

#20 Huddle: How Women Unlock Their Collective Power by Brooke Baldwin

AP: 72/ GR: 4.2 from 260/ AZ:4.8 from 236

Brooke is a CNN journalist and explores the importance of women supporting each other. Now I’m not a woman but her advice has been well-received by many. It offers practical tips for women to work together to achieve their collective goals within an organization.

#19 Work Won’t Love You Back: How Devotion to Our Jobs Keeps Us Exploited, Exhausted, and Alone by Sarah Jaffe

AP: 74/ GR: 4 from 1387/ AZ: 4.4 from 130

If you’re looking for an upbeat book, keep scrolling. Sarah unleashes a strong critique of the way we look at work by exploring how we got to where we are. The central message is stop seeking to love what you do for money because it’s all part of the system. Whether you find that depressing or empowering is down to you!

#18 Woke, Inc.: Inside Corporate America’s Social Justice Scam by Vivek Ramaswamy

AP: 74/ GR: 4.17 from 538/ AZ: 4.8 from 1312

Potentially the most controversial book on this list though it’s not as aggressive as the title might suggest. Vivek argues companies across America are only taking stands on certain topics as a form of marketing rather than believing in what they say. If you think an advert is just to tick a box, you might be right.

#17 A World Without Email: Reimagining Work in an Age of Communication Overload by Cal Newport

AP: 75/ GR: 3.95 from 2681/ AZ: 4.4 from 956

I confess I check my emails obsessively even though I know I shouldn’t. Emails were designed to be asynchronous but too many people expect instant replies. Cal offers a guide to change this damaging culture in your work and business.

#16 The Unfair Advantage: How You Already Have What It Takes to Succeed by Ash Ali and Hasan Kubba

AP: 76/ GR: 4.12 from 1016/ AZ:4.4 from 336

This is the only book on this list where I have personally met one of the authors! So much business advice relies on a mantra of hard work and sacrifice but Hasan and Ali reveal unfair advantages is the secret. We all have something we can bring to a business that our competitors can’t. They provide a roadmap for exploiting your unfair advantages.

#15 The Key Man: The True Story of How the Global Elite Was Duped by a Capitalist Fairy Tale by Simon Clark and Will Louch

AP: 76/ GR: 4.23 from 549/ AZ: 4.4 from 243

An insane story. Simon Clark and Will Louch expose Arif Navqi who cheated investors out of hundreds of millions of dollars. Both Obama and Bill Gates were amongst his victims. Compared to other tales of massively fraudulently businessmen, Arif’s is relatively unknown but no less riveting.

#14 The Conversation: How Seeking and Speaking the Truth about Racism Can Radically Transform Individuals and Organizations by Robert Livingston

AP: 76/ GR: 4.42 from 206/ AZ: 4.8 from 109

The protests of the last few years have increased the importance of workplace equality and Robert Livingston’s book is a useful aid. He aims to open up conversations rather than shut them down. It’s a thoughtful read which is heartfelt rather than preachy.

#13 Ask Iwata: Words of Wisdom from Satoru Iwata, Nintendo’s Legendary CEO by Satoru Iwata, Hobonichi, Sam Bett

AP: 77/ GR: 4.19 from 1071/ AZ: 4.8 from 1231

A short book with a collection of insights about the revolutionary leader who drove Nintendo between 2002 and 2015. He’s the man who chose to not compete with Sony and Microsoft on hardware and focus on creating games people loved instead. So many joyous moments in living rooms around the world have occurred because of his vision.

#12 An Ugly Truth: Inside Facebook’s Battle for Domination by Sheera Frenkel and Cecilia Kang

AP: 79/ GR: 4.08 from 2946/ AZ: 4.4 from 701

You have to wonder if Facebook renamed itself to Meta just so history doesn’t immediately associate them to the stings like this. It won’t work. If you want to be up to date on how much the company has abused its power, read this.

#11 Amazon Unbound: Jeff Bezos and the Invention of a Global Empire by Brad Stone

AP: 80/ GR: 4.15 from 2676/ AZ: 4.5 from 1008

Brad’s earlier book on Amazon, “The Everything Store”, was a huge bestseller in 2013. A lot has happened in the last eight years and that’s the subject of this book. It covers all the major events in detail with an often positive lens but Brad doesn’t avoid the difficult questions.

#10 My Life in Full: Work, Family, and Our Future by Indra Nooyi

AP: 81/ GR: 4.4 from 808/ AZ: 4.7 from 288

As someone of Indian heritage, Indra’s ascent to Pepsi CEO was a landmark for many in my community, especially for women. Her story is far more relatable than many other founders because she doesn’t try to create a sense of aura around herself. It’s a great read for anyone who wants to understand the decision-making process for someone at the top of a huge global company.

#9 Working Backwards: Insights, Stories, and Secrets from Inside Amazon by Colin Bryar, Bill Carr

AP: 82/ GR: 4.27 from 2028/ AZ: 4.6 from 1227

What’s great is Colin Bryar and Bill Carr both have over 20 years of Amazon experience. They break down the culture and the principles which have led to the company’s huge success. It’s an overwhelmingly positive book because of the history of the authors but one which has many practical lessons for entrepreneurs.

#8 The Cult of We: WeWork, Adam Neumann, and the Great Startup Delusion by Eliot Brown and Maureen Farrell

AP: 82/ GR: 4.34 from 1558/ AZ: 4.7 from 434

WeWork tried to be a sexy company but in reality, they were a low-margin office rental company. The hype around them was overblown and the fall was fast. $47 billion in 2019 to under $3 billion in 2021. Who can keep their eyes off a car wreck? It might help you to not fall for a similar delusional founder’s charisma in the future.

#7 The World For Sale: Money, Power, and the Traders Who Barter the Earth’s Resources by Javier Blas, Jack Farchy

AP: 82/ GR: 4.42 from 995/ AZ: 4.7 from 569

Commodities are big business but the average person doesn’t understand how the physical trade works. The people who control the trade of chemicals like cobalt, bauxite, and alumina have far more power than could ever dream of. They can choose to support or topple national governments.

#6 This Is How They Tell Me the World Ends: The Cyberweapons Arms Race by Nicole Perlroth

AP: 85/ GR: 4.38 from 2362/ AZ: 4.6 from 1647

The dark side of the explosion of the importance of technology. Businesses of any scale are going to need to start paying greater attention to security as the wars of the future will be held online. A reminder to anyone in the SaaS world to make sure their code has no loopholes even in MVP.

#5 Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals by Oliver Burkeman

AP: 86/ GR: 4.36 from 3497/ AZ: 4.6 from 671

Oliver aims this book at people obsessed with productivity. He reminds them the average human only has 4,000 weeks. Do you want to spend it crossing off meaningless tasks from your to-do list? For entrepreneurs, it makes you think about your mission rather than just short-term thinking. I love Oliver’s style which is full of nuance.

#4 Liftoff: Elon Musk and the Desperate Early Days That Launched SpaceX by Eric Berger

AP: 89/ GR: 4.52 from 2694/ AZ: 4.8 from 2057

Everybody loves writing about Elon Musk but few had the access Eric did. He is the senior space editor at Ars Technica and reported on SpaceX for over a decade. In Liftoff, he summarises everything including all of his direct interviews with Elon himself. If the innovation behind the space race fascinates you, you’ll love this.

#3 How to Avoid a Climate Disaster: The Solutions We Have and the Breakthroughs We Need by Bill Gates

AP: 91/ GR: 4.18 from 26881/ AZ: 4.5 from 7714

If you’re surprised by a book about climate being so high up then you haven’t been paying attention. Rather than just telling everyone to consume less, he accepts the developing world needs the energy to lift people out of poverty. He wants the businesses of the world to focus on clean energy instead.

#2 Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don’t Know by Adam M. Grant

AP: 94/ GR: 4.25 from 33231/ AZ: 4.6 from 6991

Adam Grant appears to have the Midas touch with yet another bestseller. His core argument here is you should always challenge why you think the way you do. He uses famous examples from history to illustrate how people didn’t have the right answer the first time around but adapted to achieve success.

#1 Empire of Pain by Patrick Radden Keefe

AP: 100/ GR: 4.59 from 18563/ AZ: 4.7 from 3089

It seems this year, people love reading about companies behaving badly! Few companies in recent memory have created more tragedy than Purdue Pharma. They intentionally triggered an opioid epidemic to increase their profits. The story is riveting and it’s a handbook of what you shouldn’t do in your own business.

Falguni called her company “Nykaa” after the Sanskrit word for heroine. With her massive success, she is undoubtedly a Nykaa herself.

She breaks every stereotype about unicorn tech founders. She’s not white. She’s not a man. She’s not a college dropout in her 20s. Yet she is a business powerhouse who now has a net worth of over $7 billion.

Falguni didn’t start Nykaa until she was 50 and she had no previous experience in retail or e-commerce. Her attempt to create India’s dominant beauty and wellness company could seem like a massive risk. She admits she “had few believers and many naysayers”.

She proved them all wrong.

She gave Indians access to global brands from an app and the demand was unstoppable. Nykaa now has 80 stores in 40 Indian cities and the parent company had $330 million in revenue last financial year.

The crazy thing is the Indian market isn’t even close to fulfilling its potential yet.

“For everyone across India who has ever had a dream, especially women, I hope the Nykaa journey — an Indian-born, owned and managed dream come true — can inspire each of you to be the Nykaa of your lives.” — Falguni Nayar

So many internet gurus scream at you to quit your job today and become your own boss. As if it were so easy. Falguni proves there is another way and what you do in your day job can fuel your business success later.

If you look at her resume, you’ll see she was always a high achiever. She has an MBA and worked at India’s top investment bank for 18 years. Especially as a woman, you don’t become the Head of Institutional Equities unless you are seriously good at what you do. Everyone around her respected her competence.

Her banking knowledge is why her net worth is so enormous and how she kept control of 53.3% of her company’s stock. For comparison, Twitter’s founders only had 17% when they went to IPO. Falguni’s smart decision was avoiding venture capital funding and instead relying on high net worth individuals.

“Being a banker, I knew VC funds come as conditional funding; it’s not really equity. If you don’t do well, it’s debt. I wanted pure equity. We have raised Rs 185 crore over three rounds with 20 unique investors. We’ll list the company.” — Falguni Nayar

Many founders find their vision distorted by the influence of other investors and Falguni’s deep experience in the sector meant she could protect herself.

My background in tech and business has helped me succeed in online business in a way most other people simply couldn’t compete with. I see too many people ignore the competitive advantages they gained from past life experiences when starting a new venture. What is your day job? What skills do you have that others in your target market don’t?

“I hope more women like me dare to dream for themselves.”

When Whitney Wolfe-Herd took Bumble public at the start of 2020, it was a significant milestone for women in tech. I would call Falguni’s story even more remarkable because of the country she grew up in.

India ranks 140th out of 153 countries in The World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2021. The country’s female labor force participation rate went down from 26% in 2005 to 20.5% in 2019. There is much change to be made to empower women and lift the economy as per Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen’s groundbreaking thesis.

I know many brilliant Indian women who feel stifled by cultural expectations. To do their own thing, they’ve had to fight against the wishes of their parents. Falguni was lucky in this regard as her father treated her the same as her brother. He taught her the basics of business management and inspired her to take the route she did.

To Indian fathers out there, don’t limit the potential of your daughters. They can take on the world.

“I don’t think men are waiting to not allow women to do what they want. I think women have to want it for themselves. And if they want it for themselves, they will have it.” — Falguni Nayar

Get on the rollercoaster early

The average spending power of an Indian is just over 10% of an American. This inequality can’t survive in the long term. Indian living standards and their influence on global demand will continue to rise. The problem is no one knows how fast this will happen.

Falguni had the foresight so many others lacked. She knew India would have a huge online retail market and realized the competition was weak. This allowed her to get in early and capture a significant market share of a fast-growing segment. It would be much harder for a copycat business to launch today because Nykaa has such a strong reputation.

Just as how Amazon started in the book market then expanded, Nykaa moved into the fashion business and created private labels. It’s smart business sense to dominate a small sector first where the competition is weak to gain the strength to take on larger segments. Now 20% of Nykaa sales are in fashion.

Many entrepreneurs start from their idea rather than looking at what the world will need in the future. Competition is vicious in markets where people have a short-term outlook. It’s much calmer where you need a longer-term perspective. If you can take this path and focus on upskilling in the meantime, you may have a better chance.

What’s great about Falguni’s story is even her intense analytical brain, she loves what she is doing. I wish we could all be so lucky.

“The size of the prize doesn’t really matter. Being rewarded for doing what I love doing is the key. Share prices are the bonus.”

You want to be a content creator. You’re sure you can be great. You’ve seen enough success porn to know all you need to do is work hard and one day you’ll make it. You’ll have the life of your dreams and live happily ever after.

Sorry, it’s time to burst your bubble.

The reality is different. I’ve grown exponentially in the last year myself and outearn my old-day job so some would think I’ve made it. They don’t see the challenges I face and how much thought goes into what I do.

Yet Ali Abdaal is a couple of years ahead of me. He’s become one of those semi-mythical beasts. A millionaire content creator. Surely Ali has made it? He must not worry about anything at all.

Wrong. He recently posted a life update and it warmed my heart to see how many of his problems I could relate to. If you dream of making it big, you must understand the realities of what this actually means.

Some of the dilemmas you face now will stay with you for years to come. You shouldn’t feel shame for being unsure as even Ali Abdaal is too.

#1 Medium to long term planning

I never thought I’d still be writing 2 years after I started. It was a new year’s resolution. As 80% of these fail, I would have been impressed if I wrote more than five pieces.

I kept going until one day I reached a tipping point. The excitement of a fresh hobby had faded. Focusing on putting out content every week became a chore. I realized I was running on a hamster wheel.

Ali’s early goal was to post two YouTube videos a week. Weekly targets create constant pressure but take you away from the big picture. It takes a certain type of person to be happy being a content mill and it’s not me. It’s not Ali either.

He’s now working on a mix of different projects, some with longer cycles than others like writing a book. He’s launching new products where he can build something long-term rather than the temporary nature of most content. You should think about doing the same to keep the passion going.

#2 What do you want from life

This planning fits into the bigger question of what’s the point of it all?

In normal careers, you follow a clear ladder of progression. You aim for the next promotion whilst trying to balance everything else on the side. In content creation, the appeal of more followers and views fades fast. The intensity of high from my first 5k followers was much greater than when I gained 50k.

We’re sold the idea becoming a content creator means freedom but how many of us live the way we dream about?

Ali has all the resources to live the way he wants but still wonders why he doesn’t live that way. Make sure you always think about how content creation fits into your wider goals for life. Some of you will want to become famous. Others would rather keep their privacy.

Know what you want so you don’t sleepwalk into a life you hate.

#3 Organizational design

Many side hustlers have unrealistic expectations of what life as a full-time content creator is like. It’s not all sunshine. Administration gremlins eat away at your day but you can’t shake them. I’m sorry to ruin your fantasy if you thought you can sit there and be creative all day.

Ali has an immense machine powered by 20 employees supporting him. You can’t reach such a scale alone unless you hate your sleep, your friends, your family, and your mental health. I don’t advise trying. I have three people working for me because I value my time.

Yet none of us know the best way to run this type of organization. It comforts me to know even Ali struggles with whether he’s managing things in the right way. Before you quit your job to become a content creator, make sure you understand it means becoming an entrepreneur too.

#4 Trying to make good content

Here’s a confession, I have tuned out of Ali’s content in recent times. He was flirting with clickbait too much and I felt it was inauthentic. I worry people will do the same to me.

Ali won me back in this video though. I was impressed he admitted he stresses about the same things I do. The temptation to get lost in the numbers can be too much sometimes and you forget what makes you worth listening to in the first place. He actually deleted the videos which I had rolled my eyes at. Top marks.

None of us are perfect and we’ll all make mistakes by following the bright lights. The simple solution is asking yourself the same question Ali asks himself:

“Am I proud of this?”

#5 Experimenting with different platforms

Newbies wonder if they are starting on the right platform.

Experts wonder if their platform is dying.

It’s funny how every platform has its own doomsayers. They shout loudly and tell everyone else the game is up! They do this for months without leaving the “dead” platform. It causes unnecessary panic for everyone in their radius.

I’m entering the YouTube world now. Ali is wondering if he should focus on TikTok instead. He doesn’t want to make TikTok content but he is scared of being left behind.

Stable times are the exception, not the rule. There will never be an extended period where you feel 100% confident you’re doing the right thing. You must accept this and back yourself to adapt if it comes to it. Panic without action is exhausting.

#6 Having a niche vs not having one

I’m sure you’ve gone through this same battle. Many people are firmly in one camp or the other in public but in private, we all doubt our decisions.

Ali knows his productivity and finance-related content make him the most money. From a business perspective, he should focus on this niche. The problem is he prefers making content about a variety of topics. Does he choose money or fulfillment?

Like everyone else, the answer lies somewhere in the middle.

My niche is now looking at how ambitious people can find balance. I feel like this will be a lifelong mission for me and I can maintain it for a long time. I hope my passion intersects with long-term income but only time will tell.

What I do know is I will never make content that is driven only by dollar bills.

#7 Day job

The ultimate decision for content creators is whether to take it full time. Most people would quit their day jobs instantly if they were bringing in $27k a week. Not Ali. He works as a qualified doctor for one day a week even though he doesn’t enjoy it.

The “doctor” label brings him respect. He’s embarrassed to call himself a content creator or a YouTuber despite his success. I can relate as I procrastinated updating my LinkedIn as long as I could. I’m still useless at telling people what I do.

People will always need doctors but there’s a tiny chance his content could get canceled. This negligible risk stops him from fully committing because he feels it gives him a backup.

It’s your personal decision to be full-time or a side-hustler but don’t let our people’s judgments keep you in a job you don’t like. Life’s too short. The skills you learn from being your own boss are highly marketable and I’m sure Ali could easily make several times his doctor salary even without a personal brand now.

#8 Time for yourself

The curse of the content creator is reaching an income target but being too insecure to take your foot off the gas.

You’d be surprised how stressed out the top writers I know are despite them easily being in the top 0.01%. It’s as if they lose perspective of how much they really need. I can spot the irrationality in others but sometimes I can’t stop myself from acting in the exact same way.

Ali knows his business doesn’t need to grow at an “exponential rate” yet struggles with accepting this. He still feels guilty when he’s having fun but he understands the importance of changing his mindset.

Wake up if you are neglecting yourself right now because of loyalty to the hustle. Mental health isn’t something you should focus on only when you have hit a certain number of views or followers. Build it into your routine now and I hope you’ll be much happier because of it.

Things weren’t as I expected.

It’s been four months since I left the safety of my full-time consulting role to join the online entrepreneur ranks. I’m living what so many people sell you on the web as the dream. I earn more than I did in my old job and have greater freedom. I’m my own boss and I’m more fulfilled.

Yet to say things have been easy would be a lie. There have been struggles and I believe everyone reading should be aware of them. Life is different now and it always comes with positives and negatives, don’t let anyone trick you into thinking otherwise. Entrepreneurship porn will taint your mind and give your unrealistic expectations of what things are like on the other side.

If you’re considering quitting your job and pursuing your passion then you must know what you’re giving up. For many people becoming an entrepreneur is the wrong choice and there’s no shame in admitting that. If you’re an employee then I envy you despite my success. These are the reasons why.

#1 Was Loki right?

Loki in the first Avengers film claims “it is the unspoken truth of humanity that you crave subjugation.” I remember the line because I thought it was nonsense at the time. Now I am forced to make a million tiny decisions every day, I’m starting to see his point.

One of the best things about being your own boss is you have full control over everything. It’s also one of the worst things too. The honeymoon period of the giddiness of power wears off quickly. Decision fatigue kicks in as the lack of restrictions gives you too much choice. I often dance on the edge of overwhelm.

I didn’t appreciate how many tasks were taken care of for me at my day job. There’s comfort in being told what to do and just doing this task to the best of your ability. Needing to be the judge, jury, and executioner is exhausting. The pressure is suffocating at times. Employees should be more grateful for all the support staff at their company who handle the things they never need to think about.

Maybe you’re sitting thinking you can handle this. That’s your ego talking. I’m looking you dead in the eye right now and can tell you however hard you think it will be, it will be harder.

#2 The lone wolf dies, the pack survives

Let’s be honest, the stereotype of the digital solopreneur is a bit of a loner and introvert. There are some like this but none of us are islands, we all need to work with others to grow and learn.

Dealing with the loss of colleagues has been my greatest struggle. I now have brilliant collaborators from all over the world but it’s not the same. I was at my last company for seven years and could bounce ideas off people all day then go to the pub with them when work ended.

Don’t underrate being part of a team from a mental health perspective. It’s priceless to know people have your back and can relate to your exact circumstances.

On the internet, everyone seems to hate their colleagues but I think this is selection bias. Only frustrated people have the fire in their bellies to smash the keyboard and publish a rant. The people who like their colleagues don’t have as raw emotion to drive them. If you’re new to your career then don’t be put off by all the bitter people out there, you can become real friends with the people you work with.

Entrepreneurship can be lonely; it’s an occupational risk.

#3 The 9–5 lifestyle is underrated

I only “work” around 30 hours a week now. This only counts the dedicated time where I’m sitting in front of my laptop taking action. Yet the truth is I’m almost always working.

Your business becomes your baby and your to-dos plague you throughout your downtime. Ideas will pop into your head at the least convenient moments. My mind is noisier than it’s ever been despite my greater focus on being mindful. I’ve got a lot of interesting things going on but the problem is there’s only so much I can process.

People like me quit their jobs thinking they will take more time off, but the opposite has been true. There are only been two days in the last three months where I haven’t done anything at all for my business including weekends. It’s often only an hour or two on Sundays but this is an exponential increase from zero hours when I was an employee.

I would never let an employer expect me to think about their company all the time but it’s hard to set those internal boundaries with yourself. When you love what you do, it can kill you slowly because you enjoy the pain. Being able to rebel against a boss and close your laptop at 5 pm is a luxury I miss.

#4 Boring stability

In pop culture, entrepreneurs are all daredevil risk-takers but these people are a minority of who I’ve interacted with. Most are way more scared about where their next paycheck is coming from than you might think.

There needs to be significant risks for there to be potential for extraordinary gains. You can have your best-ever month and the next few months crush your spirits to mush. The highs and lows feel like a cruel game dictated by cruel Norse gods for their entertainment.

Some seek to have their cake and eat it. They want to do what they want when they want but have a minimum income secured with unlimited upside. These are the most unhappy entrepreneurs I know. Others give in and seek out stable income at the expense of some of their freedom. It’s an awkward compromise between two worlds.

Fearmongers preach you can lose your day job at any time and how there is no security. Ignore them. They say this to justify their own life choices. The more big and bad they make the corporate world seem, the smarter they can convince themselves they are.

Two-thirds of people say they have never been fired and 18% have only been fired once. It varies significantly depending on your circumstances but the idea companies enjoy firing people is nonsense. Replacing employees is expensive and a hassle for employers.

Most employees can be far more certain about their next paycheck than most entrepreneurs can. I’d be lying if I said we didn’t secretly hate for you that.

Freedom and flexibility were constant features in my ‘screw the corporate world’ daydreams. I’d read so much entrepreneur porn, and I had an idealized vision of what life would be like. I believed I’d be able to do what I wanted to do when I wanted to do it.

Four months later and I’m self-imposing a nine to five lifestyle. It turns out the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Too much freedom can be stressful too.

I feel compelled to show the downsides of losing the structure in your life because I wasn’t prepared. It seems like the whole internet sings in unison against the 9–5, but it has significant upsides and might be the better lifestyle for you. If you already know it is for you, then you shouldn’t be ashamed to say so.

What’s strange about the post-pandemic world is more companies are offering their employees the chance to work hours on their terms. A new choice which was unthinkable a decade ago has emerged where you can escape the 9–5 while still being paid a stable salary. This is often portrayed as a good thing, but are we sleepwalking into a dystopia?

Restrictions are good

Hands up if you crammed everything last minute before exams at school. I know I did. My freedom in choosing when I did my work ended up in long droughts followed by massive binge sessions. I know this is unhealthy as a grown-up, but that doesn’t mean I still don’t fall into the same trap.

Being my own boss, I’ve learned that having an end to the working day is so underappreciated. I can technically create whenever I want. It sounds great in theory, but in reality, it means I’m almost always doing everything at the last moment. I’ve had days where I chill out during the day and end up at my desk at 2 am telling myself I’ll be more responsible tomorrow.

Set working hours creates an external anchor on which your mind can fixate. You want to get this done by 5 pm so you can shut up shop. This is easier when you have a physical workplace because you have the added incentive of it being home time. Some of my friends have noted that everyone seems to be finishing work on time now that they’ve returned to the office. The boundaries were blurred when everyone worked from home.

While it might sound counterintuitive, constraints encourage creativity. Games without any limits aren’t any fun. The challenge comes from trying to solve an issue within set rules. It’s easy for someone who has total control of their time to fall into analysis paralysis because of the abundance of time. Restricting your working hours forces you to get practical and triggers you to get moving.

Don’t let flexibility fool you

I dance multiple times per week because I prioritize it, but the views of some of the other dancers baffle me. They are so grateful to their boss for letting them have an hour break between 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm, then they go back to the office and work until midnight afterward.

This is toxic flexibility.

If you’re working 80 hours weeks, you don’t need flexibility; you need a more sensible workload. The corporate world’s new favorite buzzword shouldn’t distract you from the underlying problem. For some, there’s an unwritten rule for people to be available at all hours outside of where they’ve asked for something specific.

The obvious winners from the current trend are working parents who can take their kids to and from school. I had several clients who took advantage of this, but they also seemed to have the worst boundaries for calling me out of hours. They’d also take calls while driving, and it felt like their work and blurred into their life. Parents need structure and downtime too.

When my dad was my age, there were no cell phones, and you couldn’t check your emails before bed. He clocked in at 9 am and left at 5 pm. There was little room for discussion. It meant office hours were the company’s, but more importantly, free time was truly his. It worries me how many people I know can’t say this anymore.

It’s a simplicity I envy, and I will attempt to impose this on myself through technology restrictions. One way is through using an old dumber phone during the day, which has all my business-related accounts on it, but it gets locked in a drawer when it’s “me” time.

With great power comes great responsibility

The best thing about being my own boss is I can do what I want.

The worst thing is I have to make all the decisions.

It’s a trial by fire of learning what I can do when and I’ve made many mistakes. I was excited about training off-peak at the gym when I first left my company but soon realized the reality wasn’t as great. It means traveling both ways plus a shower when I get back and then having a snack, and before I know it, a few hours have passed. This squashes my productivity, so I end up working later into the night to get things done.

In the last 30 days, I’ve had social plans for 26 of them. I’m my own boss, isn’t this why I quit? But I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t exhausting. People know I’m in charge, and if they want to see me, it’s hard for me to say no. I shift all my tasks around to make space for them. Though it shouldn’t, telling people I want to get stuff done for the business sometimes feels weird. In seizing every opportunity, I’m leaving myself spread thin, whereas the routine of a 9–5 had an elegant balance.

If you currently have a 9–5 where your boundaries are respected, remember the other side isn’t as glamorous as you might believe.

If you’re reading online today searching for the secret thing that’s going to make you rich with no effort, I’ve got bad news for you.

It doesn’t exist.

The internet often uses a liberal definition of the word “passive” to sucker people into clicking. Everybody wants the idea of free money so it’s hard for creators to resist selling the unrealistic dream.

Let me be clear.

Writing an article or making a video every single day is not passive.

Spending weeks building an online course is not my idea of passive.

Messaging everyone you went to elementary school with individually on Facebook begging them to buy your e-book is not passive.

The only one I’ll concede is automated investing where it goes straight out of your bank account into some form of asset. Even then prices can go up and down so there’s no guarantee.

The idea of scalable income is far less misleading. It does make sense to focus your efforts on channels where there’s the potential for the same amount of effort to lead to far higher revenue in the future. You just need to make the important shift of understanding you have to put in some work.

You only see the tip

If you follow me, you see a few articles a week and a podcast episode through Mindful & Driven. You have no idea what I do outside of that time.

The problem is we tend to glamourize those in passive-like industries without stopping to think about what their actual days are like or how they got there. A lot of my revenue-generating activity is behind NDAs. I don’t talk about the boring side of my work which can distort people’s mental images. This is common across many successful-looking people online.

I’ve grown multiple income streams fast but there’s a lot of work behind it you don’t see. I also benefitted from a sea of unfair advantages that I know the average reader won’t have.

I was born in a rich English-speaking country. I went to a top university and studied economics. I have a stable middle-class family. I had a tech career where I worked with big multinationals. My parents supported me in any of the hobbies I wanted to pursue.

You could say I was an overnight online success story but it ignores the skills I built through my 28 years of life before I started. There’s a lot of accumulated hard work. For many others who work less than me and earn more, these unfair advantages will be more extreme.

Red light, green light

In Squid Game, the contestants play a kid’s game called Red Light, Green Light. The aim is to catch the person at the other end but you can only move when they aren’t watching. This is what happens in business, if you turn your back, you can be damn sure people will catch up with you.

The world doesn’t stand still for you while you’re sipping cocktails on the beach.

If you create a product or online course, it won’t be long before it becomes outdated or someone builds a better one. I created a course about this platform in spring but things have changed so much since then. I will be recording everything again and launching another marketing campaign as a result. Passive my foot!

For any product, you need to continue to get customers in the door and the traffic needs to come from somewhere. If you stop producing content then it won’t be long until your supply dries up. Evergreen is a myth too unless you produce something out of this world. One of my articles received half a million views and there have been half a million copycats since.

You’re going to need to either update your products, work to generate leads, or pay someone to do it for you. Sorry to shatter your cocktail dream.

Perfect market

Be skeptical.

As an editor, I’ve seen so many articles sent my way about how to become a millionaire through passive income. None of the writers were millionaires. Funny that isn’t it.

Making extraordinary money isn’t so easy otherwise everyone would do it. A tiny percentage of YouTubers make any money and most “passive income” ideas aren’t worth the pixels they take up. It’s impossible to get rich doing something everyone else can also do unless you get lucky and are early.

To have an income source that continues to feed you long after you’ve done the work, you must have robust barriers to competition. It must be something other people can’t just replicate which probably isn’t going to be found in “101 PASSIVE INCOME IDEAS THAT ANYONE CAN DO TO MAKE YOU RICH NOW!!!!”.

One to many

The question isn’t how can you make money without any effort. The question is how can you maximize the return on the effort you put in.

The answer is scalable income. Where you do the work once and each additional sale doesn’t take up much of your time. You’ll need to continue to invest time throughout the stream’s lifetime to ensure it stays healthy. This is a more honest description of what online courses and ebooks are.

There’s also the inherent risk that you can do everything right and do the work then it doesn’t scale. Nothing is guaranteed yet it’s better to focus on scalable income which has the growth potential. When you are stuck trading hours for income then there’s no possibility of your rewards going into the stratosphere.

The forgotten path

The basic revenue equation is price x units sold.

Everyone seems obsessed with how many products they sell rather than the potentially smarter route of increasing prices instead. If you have a product worth $10k then you need to sell less than one a month to make six figures. You can scale your income by entering an industry where greater skills convert to higher prices at a steep rate.

Break out of the mindset of how many $5 ebooks can you sell and think about how can you build your brand so you can sell a $500 ebook instead. Gaining this kind of expertise is active work but it could lead to the results you’re hoping for.

This is what I’m aiming for long term. Trying to grow a huge presence to sell everyone a budget product is exhausting. I’d rather focus on high quality so I can deliver exceptional results for a few people whilst others can benefit from my free content.

Scalable income is often mislabeled as passive income. Pursue scalable income all you want but don’t let anyone trick you into thinking it’s eas

As Silicon Valley mega-founders go, Justin seems strangely likable.

He earned his stripes by co-founding the giant live streaming platform Twitch back in 2011. You might not have heard of it but it has the 36th highest global engagement of any site on the web. For context, Twitter is one place below!

After only three years, Amazon bought the company for $970m and made Justin rich beyond most of our wildest dreams. You could say he had officially made it but the question for him was now what?

The way people perceived him had completely changed. His status represented something to them and he couldn’t be regular Justin Kan anymore. He struggled to tell whether people wanted to be his friend because they were inspired or because they saw him as an opportunity.

Even people who have far more modest achievements like me have felt this difference. It’s funny how everyone wants to be your friend when they think you can help them, isn’t it? This shift in relationships can be toxic to people’s well-being.

What makes Justin interesting is how transparent he is on social media. Through his Twitter and YouTube channels, he gives insight into what’s going on in his mind rather than the generic lines most tech founders trot out. He recently revealed the three lessons he learned about life after the big buyout.

Be open

When you’re burned by those who see you as an opportunity, the easiest thing is to raise your guard. Yet this doubles your losses because you don’t create the bonds which could have given you so much joy.

I’ve got a one-year-old nephew who will speed crawl over to any other baby he sees. He’ll plop down in front of them then blurt out some gibberish. They both giggle at a joke only they understand and they’re now best mates.

Yet 45% of adults find it difficult to make new friends. The average American hasn’t made a new friend in 5 years. Justin was oblivious of this until he tried to convince someone he knew to move away from California with him. The person refused without any debate. They were being alone in a new place.

You might think the pool of people who could relate to Justin’s lavish life is small but he instead chooses to see the similarities between people, not the differences. Even with an 8-figure net worth, he still believes he can learn something from everyone he meets. From a happy barista, he learned a phrase that has stuck with him.

“Why do you think the present is called the present? Because it’s a gift.”

It doesn’t matter how successful you are, other people can always teach you something new.

Stop keeping score

Three simple words will change the way I see you forever.

You owe me.

I’m less than two years into this online world but my gut can spot these people a mile away. If you freely offer to help someone then don’t poison it by later claiming they owe you. Keeping score isn’t a good way to create genuine relationships. When you feel you’re being taken advantage of, it’s better to be honest about it than use it as future emotional blackmail.

Despite Justin’s wealth, he is proactive about trying to help other people. He offers before someone asks him and never expects anything in return. It’s a simple philosophy of put out good energy into the world and if it’s returned then great. If not then you can still take satisfaction in your intentions.

A mutual lack of entitlement is key to creating true friendships by valuing everyone’s time. I’m more likely to help you if I feel you aren’t just trying to use me like most people are. Forget the slimy salesman tactics and focus on energizing those around you not draining them.

Your life will be better off because of it.

Masks are for your face, not your feelings

Hustle porn has rotted the minds of many entrepreneurs who try to show an impenetrable fortress of awesomeness all the time. They think it makes them look strong but it makes them seem fake. Real people aren’t 100% every day. I enjoy working with people, not robots. Justin confesses he did this himself for the first ten years of his career.
